President Donald Trump warned Congressional Republicans Wednesday night not to vote to end his tariffs on Canada, claiming those who do will "seriously suffer the consequences" in upcoming elections.

The warning occurred shortly before six House Republicans voted with Democrats to end the tariffs in a 219-211 split, but the vote is largely considered symbolic because Trump is expected to veto it, which would then require a two-thirds majority in both chambers to overturn.

Trump imposed the tariffs last year over the country's failure to prevent fentanyl from flowing across the United States' northern border.

"Any Republican, in the House or the Senate, that votes against tariffs will seriously suffer the consequences come election time, and that includes primaries," Trump posted to Truth Social. "Our trade deficit has been reduced by 78%, the Dow Jones has just hit 50,000, and the S&P, 7,000, all numbers that were considered impossible just one year ago.

"In addition, tariffs have given us great national security because the mere mention of the word has countries agreeing to our strongest wishes," he continued. "Tariffs have given us economic and national security, and no Republican should be responsible for destroying this privilege."

The warning comes as Republicans in both chambers prepare for midterm elections later this year. The primaries begin next month while the general election will take place in November.

The six House Republicans who voted with Democrats to adopt the resolution are Reps. Don Bacon of Nebraska, Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, Jeff Hurd of Colorado, Kevin Kiley of California, Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Dan Newhouse of Washington.

Democratic Maine Rep. Jared Golden voted against the resolution.
