President Donald Trump and first lady Melonia Trump got a mixed response from fellow audience members Wednesday night attending the opening performance of the musical “Les Miserables” at the Kennedy Center.

Some audience members cheered and chanted “USA” while others booed, in the first time Trump has attended a performance at the Washington, D.C., venue since he effectively took control of it earlier this year.

Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha Vance, got a similar reception when they attended an event at the performing arts center in March.

Several cast members before Wednesday's performance said they would not go stage. Trump told reporters befor the performance that he “couldn’t care less” about whether anyone boycotted the show because of him.

“All I do is run the country well,” he said. “There’s no inflation, people are happy, people are wealthy, the country is getting back its strength again. That’s what I care about.”

Also in attendance were several drag performers who reportedly got their tickets from people who no longer wanted to attend the show.

Trump said in February on Truth Social that he would put an end to drag shows at the center.

“NO MORE DRAG SHOWS, OR OTHER ANTI-AMERICAN PROPAGANDA,” the post reads.

Trump's takeover of the center in February included an overhaul of the board of trustees and naming himself as chairman in an effort to counter what he considered so-called "wokeness" in the arts.
