D.C. police will begin limited cooperation with ICE
President Donald Trump this week assumed direct control of the MPD and deployed the National Guard as part of a large-scale crackdown on crime in the city.
The D.C. Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) will begin cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after MPD chief Pamela Smith signed an order permitting officers to assist the agency in a limited capacity.
The move marks a dramatic shift from D.C.'s sanctuary policies, but the MPD remains limited to sharing information about persons not in MPD custody. The police may also assist with the transportation of illegal aliens.
The city permits non-citizen voting in local elections, though Mayor Muriel Bowser has insisted the city's policies do not make it a full-blown "sanctuary city."
