The Trump administration announced Friday that it has reached a $75 million settlement with Northwestern University that will end outstanding probes and restore federal funding.

The Trump administration paused nearly $800 million in federal research grants and contracts for the school in April, making it the first school outside of the Ivy League system to be targeted by the White House in response to alleged civil rights violations, including their responses to antisemitic protests on its campus, according to Politico.

Northwestern is expected to pay the United States $75 million through 2028 in exchange for ending probes by the Department of Education and Department of Health and Human Services on the school’s compliance with anti-discrimination laws, and ending pending probes by the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division.

"The Northwestern agreement is a huge win for current and future Northwestern students, alumni, faculty, and for the future of American higher education," Education Secretary Linda McMahon said. "The deal cements policy changes that will protect students and other members of the campus from harassment and discrimination, and it recommits the school to merit-based hiring and admissions.

"The reforms reflect bold leadership at Northwestern and they are a roadmap for institutional leaders around the country that will help rebuild public trust in our colleges and universities," she added.

The university said it also agreed to provide "single-sex housing for any woman, defined on the basis of sex, who requests such accommodations and all-female sports, locker rooms and showering facilities," Politico reported.
