Democratic governors weigh in on potential 2028 presidential bids

Two Democratic governors on Thursday weighed in on whether they were considering presidential bids in 2028, with one claiming they were open to the idea and the other denying rumors they were seeking higher office.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore strongly denied any presidential ambitions for 2028 during an appearance on "The View," stating he was "not running," despite recent praise from Democrats over his leadership of the state. 

The governor also stated he was not running in March during a dinner at the Gridiron Club in Washington D.C., where he claimed that he would not attend fancy events like the dinner if he was actually considering a bid.

“If I actually wanted to be president, I wouldn’t do any of this," he said, per The Hill. “Instead, I would take my case directly to the people who are in charge of our democracy: the Kremlin."

The rejections come even as he prepares for a trip to the swing state of Pennsylvania. 

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear on the other hand, admitted on Thursday that he might seek the presidency in 2028 if he thought he was the best person to unite the country. 

“If you’d asked me a couple years ago if this is something I’d consider, I probably wouldn’t have, but I don’t want to leave a broken country to my kids,” the governor told a local news outlet. “So if I’m somebody that can bring this nation together, hopefully find some common ground, it’s something I’ll consider."

Beshear, who recently launched his own podcast, is considered a more moderate Democrat given his leadership in a predominantly conservative state. 

Other Democratic governors who have been floated as serious 2028 contenders include California's Gavin Newsom, Michigan's Gretchen Whitmer, and Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania. 

No Democrat has officially declared their candidacy so far.
