New Jersey Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherrill and Republican Jack Ciattarelli won their respective party's nominations for governor on Tuesday night, in a race to replace outgoing Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy.

President Donald Trump endorsed Ciattarelli in his third bid for the top seat in the state last month. Ciattarelli was the New Jersey GOP nominee in 2021 but narrowly lost to Murphy.

The Associated Press called the race for Ciattarelli 20 minutes after the polls closed. He defeated State Senator Jon M. Bramnick and Bill Spadea.

Sherrill, a four-term congresswoman, defeated a large field of five challengers and the race was called for her nearly an hour after polls closed.

New Jersey is one of two states with a gubernatorial election this November. Virginia will also have its election later this year, where Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears will face off against former Democratic Virginia Rep. Abigail Spanberger to replace Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin.
