The Justice Department (DOJ) on Friday announced it was preparing to send election monitors to watch polls in California and New Jersey during their general elections next month.

New Jersey voters will be voting on an array of issues and choosing their next governor, while California voters will decide whether the state legislature can redraw California's congressional map to counter Republican efforts ahead of the 2026 midterms.

There are also critical elections in Virginia and New York City next month, but the DOJ did not signal that it would send monitors to those states.

The department said the monitors would ensure transparency and ballot security, and that the states are complying with federal law.

“Transparency at the polls translates into faith in the electoral process, and this Department of Justice is committed to upholding the highest standards of election integrity,” Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement. “We will commit the resources necessary to ensure the American people get the fair, free, and transparent elections they deserve.”

The monitors are expected to be stationed in Fresno, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, and Riverside counties in California and Passaic County, New Jersey.

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2025.
