Social media on Thursday erupted after a video went viral that showed a Democratic mayoral candidate in Minneapolis speaking Somali during a rally, and waving what appeared to a variation of a Somali flag.

Democratic socialist candidate Omar Fateh, an American who was born to Somalian immigrant parents, addressed a rally of supporters earlier this year when he began speaking the foreign language and waved the flag in an attempt to get votes from the city's Somalian population.

Conservative activists and commentators blasted Fateh, who has been referred to as the Zohran Mamdani of Minneapolis, for appearing to support another country while running to be mayor of a major American city.

"Omar Fateh out here waving a foreign flag, speaking a language that sounds like my GPS having a meltdown, pledging loyalty to Somalia, and asking Somalians to elect him for mayor," Podcast host Chad Prather said on X. "At this point I’m just wondering if I missed the part where Minneapolis got a new zip code."

Conservative Florida content creator Eric Daugherty claimed the city was "doomed" because Fateh appeared to pledge his support to Somalia.

"Americans are shocked at Minneapolis mayoral candidate Omar Fateh disgustingly pledging loyalty to the country of Somalia, waving the Somali flag and speaking a foreign language to win votes of the Somali population," he said. "Minneapolis is DOOMED."

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer also slammed Fateh for appearing to support Somalia during the rally, stating the actions imply the candidate "hates" the United States.

"In case you needed more evidence that Omar Fatah puts America last, here he is waving a foreign flag and pledging his support to Somalia," Emmer said. "Minneapolis: You can’t let this lunatic run your city! He hates our country."
