Alabama GOP Sen. Tommy Tuberville on Tuesday launched a website announcing his run for governor next year, instead of seeking reelection, ending weeks of speculation.

The senator is seeking to replace current Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey, a Republican who is term-limited. The announcement was first noted when Tuberville launched a website for his campaign, along with changing his handle on social media.

“Today I will announce that I will be the future Governor of the great state of Alabama," Tuberville told Fox News' The Will Cain Show. “I’ve still got 18 months to go with President [Donald] Trump to Make America Great Again. We’ve got a lot of work to do. Monday we’ll go back and pass the Big Beautiful Bill for President Trump.”

Tuberville beat former U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions in 2020 and went on to win the Senate general election race. Sessions was a longtime U.S. senator from Alabama before Trump named him attorney general.

The announcement means that Alabama will have an open seat in the midterms. No Republican has announced intentions to fill the seat so far.
