The Treasury Department on Monday reported that the United States brought in a record-breaking $16.3 billion in duties from customs in April, marking a $7.6 billion increase from March.

The increase comes after the Trump administration levied heavy tariffs on U.S. trading partners, including tariffs on steel and aluminum, and products from Canada and Mexico.

The new numbers mean that the United States has collected a total of $63.3 billion in customs duties since the start of the current fiscal year, which began last October. The number is also a $15.4 billion increase from the same period last year.

The U.S.' total surplus for April was $258 billion, an increase of 23% from the same period a year ago. But the U.S. is still seeing a $1.05 trillion deficit for the current fiscal year, through April, which is also 23% higher than a year ago, according to the Wall Street Journal.
