Treasury Department to end federal tax benefits for illegal migrants: Bessent
Bessent said refunded portions of some income tax benefits will no longer go to illegal migrants, including the Earned Income Tax Credit, the Additional Child Tax Credit, the American Opportunity Tax Credit and the Saver’s Match Credit.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Friday that his department is working to end federal tax benefits for illegal migrants at the order of President Donald Trump.
The order comes after Trump announced he was placing a permanent "pause" on immigration from "Third World Countries" on social media, partly citing the financial cost of admitting the migrants. Trump claimed that a migrant earning "$30,000 with a green card will get roughly $50,000 in yearly benefits for their family."
Bessent said refunded portions of some income tax benefits will no longer go to illegal migrants, including the Earned Income Tax Credit, the Additional Child Tax Credit, the American Opportunity Tax Credit and the Saver’s Match Credit.
"If you’re here illegally, there’s no place for you in our financial system," Bessent wrote in another post on X. "Illegal aliens that use our financial institutions to move their illicitly obtained funds is exploitation, and it will end."
The move comes after an illegal migrant from Afghanistan allegedly shot two West Virginia National Guard members on Wednesday, one of whom died on Thursday.
