Inspector General launches probe of Mikie Sherrill military records leak
Sherrill is currently running for governor of New Jersey.
National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) acting Inspector General Will Brown on Tuesday confirmed that he would investigate the leak of Rep. Mikie Sherrill's full military records.
Brown confirmed that he had "initiated an investigation into the matter," Politico reported. The move follows calls from Democrats to probe the leak, which prompted allegations of political conspiracy.
Sherrill is currently running for governor of New Jersey. Her campaign, however, has hit a snag amid revelations that she was not permitted to walk at her graduation ceremony from the Naval Academy as she failed to report students involved in a cheating scandal.
NARA gave the information to a campaign ally of Republican Jack Ciattarelli, who submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. National Personnel Records Center Director Scott Levins said that his agency released the information in error.
The Ciattarelli campaign has denied any wrongdoing. At present, the governor's race is regarded as a tossup, with Sherrill leading by an average 6.5% in the RealClearPolitics aggregate.
