Johnson expects House will decide to expel Rep. Cherfilus-McCormick
Johnson's comments follow Reps. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., and Tony Gonzales, R-Texas, announcing plans to resign amid their own, unrelated scandals.
House Speaker Mike Johnson on Tuesday indicated that he expected the House would determine that Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, D-Fla., should be removed from Congress.
“I do think certainly on Cherfilus-McCormick, the Ethics Committee has gone through all of its processes, and they found some alarming facts," he said on Tuesday. "I think the facts are indisputable at this point, and so I believe it’ll be the consensus of this body that she should be expelled. I mean, that certainly rises to the level that’s needed.”
McCormick has faced allegations of embezzling $5 million in disaster aid, including a federal indictment on the matter. The House Ethics Committee in late March announced it had found "clear and convincing" evidence that McCormick was guilty. McCormick faces growing calls to resign or face expulsion from the chamber.
Johnson's comments follow Reps. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., and Tony Gonzales, R-Texas, announcing plans to resign amid their own, unrelated scandals. Rep. Cory Mills, R-Fla., has also faced calls to step down.
