The majority of Americans said in a poll released Thursday that they trust private sector data more than data released by the federal government, just weeks after President Donald Trump sacked the leader of the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Trump claimed the former employee had overstated jobs growth under the last president to aid former Vice President Kamala Harris' presidential campaign and that she had wrongly revised his own jobs numbers downwards.
The Napolitan News survey, which was conducted on Wednesday and Thursday, found that 59% of respondents said they trust private sector information more than the government, and 20% said they trust federal data more.
The survey also found that 47% of respondents consider data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics somewhat reliable, while 46% say it is not reliable. Just 13% of voters find the bureau's data to be very reliable.
Additionally, just 24% said they believe government data is released in a neutral and unbiased manner, while two thirds (68%) believe politics influences the information.
Napolitan polled 1,000 registered voters and the survey has a 3.1% margin of error.
