FCC to launch investigation into Comcast and NBCUniversal's DEI policies

Carr claimed the goal of the investigation was to "ensure" the companies "are not promoting invidious forms of discrimination in violation of FCC and civil rights laws.”

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Brendan Carr on Wednesday announced that he was launching an investigation into Comcast and NBCUniversal over its diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order last month that eliminates DEI programs in the federal government, and other companies have since rolled back their DEI policies and programs to better align with the administration. Comcast however, still maintains that DEI is a “core value” of its businesses on its website, per The Hill.

Carr sent a letter to Comcast Chairman Brian Roberts on Tuesday, which claimed the goal of the investigation is to “ensure that your companies are not promoting invidious forms of discrimination in violation of FCC and civil rights laws.”

"Despite DEI’s rapid emergence in recent years, these forms of discrimination have long been condemned by America’s civil rights laws," Carr wrote on X in announcing the letter. "Thankfully, President Trump has taken quick and decisive action to root out the scourge of DEI. Following President Trump’s executive actions, we have ended the FCC’s promotion of DEI."

Carr added that his commission will be "taking steps" to ensure that other media agencies that the FCC regulates follow suit. PBS has announced this week it will close its DEI office due to pressure from the Trump administration.

A spokesperson for Comcast told CNBC that it had received the FCC's inquiry and would be complying with the investigation.

“We have received an inquiry from the Federal Communications Commission and will be cooperating with the FCC to answer their questions,” a Comcast spokesperson said in a statement. “For decades, our company has been built on a foundation of integrity and respect for all of our employees and customers.”
