South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster will reportedly announce his choice to replace fellow Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham on Monday at 4 p.m. Eastern Time.
The time of the announcement is being reported by Fox News.
Republicans are moving quickly to find a temporary replacement for Graham, until an election, amid their very narrow Senate majority, 53-47. Graham's death this weekend and Kentucky GOP Sen. Mitch McConnell's medical absence shrinks the Senate Republican Conference, at least temporarily, to 51 members – one more that a simple majority to pass legislation.
Graham died unexpectedly over the weekend at the age of 71, leaving it to the governor to name an interim replacement to complete his term.
President Donald Trump has suggested that McMaster nominate Graham's sister, Darlene. Other possible selections have included Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette, and former U.N. Ambassador and Gov. Nikki Haley – all Republicans.
The selection will serve only through January, but the Republican Party will have to hold a special primary to determine its candidate to serve the next full term.
