Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy promised Thursday that his department will be cracking down on "shady" trucking companies that hire illegal migrants to be truck drivers after four Americans died in a collision with a truck in Indiana earlier this month.

The comment was in response to Indiana GOP Sen. Jim Banks, who highlighted the importance of the trucking industry in his home state, but declared that trucking companies who are employing the illegal migrants must be held accountable.

"[Sen. Banks] is absolutely right," Duffy wrote on X. "Too many lives have been lost and this must stop. We will crack down on these shady trucking companies and get to the bottom of the crash that killed four members of the Amish community in Indiana. Stay tuned for more to come on this."

The comments also come after the Transportation Department said last week that it had pulled hundreds of illegal migrant truckers from the road because they failed to meet English proficiency standards.

Banks also lamented Monday that at least seven Americans in his state have died in the past six months because of truck drivers who are also illegal migrants, including the four who were killed in a crash with a Kyrgyzstani national last week.

The incident killed a 50-year-old Amish man, his 19 and 25-year-old sons and a friend of theirs from the Amish community.
