Louisville Democratic Mayor Craig Greenberg on Thursday night confirmed that the death toll from a United Parcel Service (UPS) plane crash earlier in the week has increased to 13, with nine others still missing.

The plane crash occurred Tuesday, shortly after takeoff from the Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport in Kentucky. Investigators said the UPS cargo plane’s left wing caught fire and an engine fell off shortly after takeoff, causing it to crash.

The 13th victim, who has not been identified so far, died at the hospital. The cause of death was not immediately known.

"On my way to the Teamsters’ vigil, I learned of a 13th person that died as a result of the UPS flight 2976 plane crash," Greenberg posted to X. "My heart is with the families, friends and colleagues of all who were lost in this week’s tragedy.  We will get through this together."

UPS has identified the three pilots on board its plane as Captain Richard Wartenberg, First Officer Lee Truitt, and International Relief Officer Captain Dana Diamond.

“Our hearts go out to every UPSer who has been impacted and all in our Louisville community – supporting you and ensuring you receive the care and resources you need is our priority,” the company said in statement.

The Louisville coroner is working on identifying the other victims who were found, Greenberg said, per ABC News.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are conducting the investigation into the crash, which is led by the NTSB.
