Trump again fumes over Jerome Powell on interest rates
Either way, Powell's term is set to expire while Trump remains in office, so he will still be able to name his replacement.
President Donald Trump this week expressed the desire to fire Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell as the Fed appears poised to maintain interest rates.
“Frankly, I would love to get the guy currently in there out right now, but people are holding me back,” Trump said Tuesday, according to Politico. He subsequently said that “I’ll be honest, I’d love to fire his ass."
Trump has repeatedly attacked Powell for his hesitation to cut interest rates, giving him the nickname "too late" Powell. He has previously suggested he may fire Powell, though the president's authority to do so remains the subject of debate.
