Trump doubles down: 'We're not talking amnesty'
"We've got to give the farmers the people they need, but we're not talking amnesty," Trump insisted.
President Donald Trump on Tuesday confirmed he was not interested in pursuing any form of amnesty agreement amid reports that lawmakers and agricultural industry heavyweights were pushing for such an arrangement.
"We've got to give the farmers the people they need, but we're not talking amnesty," Trump insisted. His remarks follow Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins issuing a similar declaration that day, saying "[t]here will be no amnesty, the mass deportations continue but in a strategic way, and we move the workforce towards automation and 100% American participation."
Earlier this year, the Department of Homeland Security briefly issued a pause on immigration raids on farms and hotels and Trump himself floated some sort of policy change to keep those industries staffed. Those developments led to considerable backlash from MAGA supporters and DHS quickly reversed course on the pause.
The latest round of amnesty speculation, however, came as conservative heavyweights like Charlie Kirk warned that the administration was facing a mounted lobbying effort to pull back on ICE raids and grant amnesty.
