President Donald Trump this week suggested that states levy taxes to fund child care programs at that level government since Washington lacked the funds to address the issue.

“The United States can’t take care of day care," he said, during an Easter event at the White House. "That has to be up to a state. We can’t take care of daycare. We’re a big country. We have 50 states. We have all these other people."

He further highlighted America's ongoing military commitments, asserting that such endeavors presented a budget hurdle to other programs.

“We’re fighting wars. We can’t take care of day care. You gotta to let a state take care of day care, and they should pay for it, too," he went on. "They should pay. They have to raise their taxes, but they should pay for it."

The comments are unlikely to resonate with the public in light of strong public opposition to the war in Iran. A Reuters/Ipsos survey found that 66% of Americans favored a quick end to the war, even at the cost of U.S. operational success. Just 27% said that the U.S. should continue fighting to achieve its war aims.
