Trump to sign order easing sanctions on Syria: Report
The country remains of strategic importance in the Middle East and the fall of the Assad government meant that Iran lacked a crucial partner during its short war with Israel.
President Donald Trump will soon sign an executive order to reduce sanctions on Syria, following the collapse of the Assad government earlier this year, CBS News reported, citing "two sources familiar with the anticipated order."
After years of civil war, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad fled the country in the face of a shock offensive by rebel groups that swept the country. The rebel forces then installed Ahmed al-Sharaa (aka al-Jolani) as the transitional leader. Al-Sharaa has strong links to Islamic jihadist groups, but has attempted to portray his government as tolerant of ethnic and religious minorities.
Trump previously promised to end sanctions on the country in a bid to help it recover from the long civil war. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, in May, said that "the Treasury Department and the State Department are implementing authorizations to encourage new investment into Syria."
