President Donald Trump on Wednesday wrote to Israeli President Isaac Herzog urging him to issue Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a pardon amid his ongoing legal woes.

"Prime Minister Netanyahu has stood tall for Israel in the face of strong adversaries and long odds, and his attention cannot be unnecessarily diverted," Trump wrote. "While I absolutely respect the independence of the Israeli Justice System, and its requirements, I believe that this 'case' against Bibi... is a political, unjustified prosecution."

Netanyahu has faced corruption allegations for years and has asserted the allegations are politically motivated. Trump, in June, urged Israel to cancel the trial altogether.
