Democrats plan to attack the Roe v. Wade decision in the House with two bills targeting protecting access to abortion later this week.
After the historic 6-3 Dobbs v. Jackson ruling, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that the constitution does not allow the right to an abortion. Democrats plan to vote on legislation that will protect women's rights to travel to other states to access abortion.
Many abortion-groups and some Republican governors have already expressed interest in making traveling out of state for abortions illegal.
The second bill plans to update the Women’s Health Protection Act to include abortion rights into law. This prior bill passed last fall with all but one Democrat voting in favor.
The senate looks to be an uphill battle as the Women’s Health Protection Act failed to pass twice while Democrats do not have 60 votes to pass the filibuster requirements.
Biden signed an executive order last week which expanded access to abortions through the Department of Health and Human services.
“We have a sacred, fundamental duty to expand freedom in America, not to roll back fundamental rights. While Republicans seek to criminalize reproductive health care nationwide, House Democrats will never relent in our fight to defend freedom for women and for every American,” Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said in a statement.
