Mexico, Canada to impose tariffs on US goods to retaliate against Trump

Canada and Mexico plan to impose retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods in response to President Donald Trump's tariffs set to take place soon.

Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum said Tuesday that she would announce Sunday which American goods Mexico will target with tariffs. 

“There is no motive or reason, nor justification that supports this decision that will affect our people and our nations,” she said, referencing Trump's tariffs, according to The Associated Press.

Meanwhile, Canada said that it would place tariffs on over $100 billion of American goods over the next three weeks.

President Donald Trump announced that he would impose tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods due to illicit drugs such as fentanyl being smuggled into the U.S. at its Canada and Mexico border at “unacceptable levels."

The tariffs took affect March 4.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Tuesday that there was no reason for Trump's tariffs because less than one percent of fentanyl seized at the US border was from Canada.
