Over 200K people sign petition to revoke Elon Musk's Canadian citizenship amid Trump alliance
The petition calls upon Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to revoke Musk's dual citizenship and cancel his passport. Musk, who was born in South Africa, has both U.S. and Canadian citizenship.
More than 218,000 Canadians have signed a petition as of Monday that seeks to revoke Elon Musk's citizenship in Canada, claiming his involvement with the Trump administration undermines the country's sovereignty.
The petition was filed by Qualia Reed, an author from Nanaimo, British Columbia, and promoted by Democratic parliamentary member Charlie Angus last week. It is now making its way through the Canadian House of Commons, per The Hill.
The petition calls upon Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to revoke Musk's dual citizenship and cancel his passport. Musk, who was born in South Africa, has both U.S. and Canadian citizenship, because his mother was born in Saskatchewan.
The signers accuse Musk of "engaging in activities that go against the national interest of Canada," using his wealth and influence to impact Canadian elections, attempting to attack Canadian sovereignty, and working for a "foreign government that is attempting to erase Canadian sovereignty."
The allegations come after President Donald Trump threatened to impose large tariffs on Canadian goods, and claimed the U.S. could annex Canada and make it the 51st U.S. state.
New signers can join the petition until June 20.
