Biden announces additional $150 million in Ukrainian military aid

President Joe Biden on Friday announced another round of military aid to Ukraine to help the Eastern European nation combat an ongoing invasion by Russia.

“Today, the United States is continuing our strong support for the brave people of Ukraine as they defend their country against Russia’s ongoing aggression,” Biden said, according to The Hill.

The aid package will reportedly consist of $150 million worth of artillery munitions, radars and equipment, the News outlet noted.

Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24 and, though attempts to take the capital have thus far failed, Moscow has solidified control over much of the Ukrainian coastline and eastern provinces.

Biden pressed Congress to approve more direct aid to Kyiv, asserting that the allocated resources for helping Ukraine were running dry.

"With today’s announcement, my administration has nearly exhausted funding that can be used to send security assistance through drawdown authorities for Ukraine," he said.

“For Ukraine to succeed in this next phase of war its international partners, including the U.S., must continue to demonstrate our unity and our resolve to keep the weapons and ammunition flowing to Ukraine, without interruption," he continued. "Congress should quickly provide the requested funding to strengthen Ukraine on the battlefield and at the negotiating table.” 

The administration previously asked Congress to approve $33 billion in aid to Ukraine, though the legislature has yet to allocate the funds.

In addition to funding, Washington has also supplied military equipment, including Javelin missile systems, to Kyiv to such a degree that defense officials have worried about the remaining inventory in the American arsenal being insufficient for the nation's own operations.
