Conservative party in UK to introduce mandatory national service at 18

Great Britain's Conservative Party is expected to introduce mandatory national service for 18-year-olds if they win the national election in the coming months.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said Sunday that young adults will have the choice of volunteering one weekend every month for a year or spending a full year in the armed forces.

"Britain today faces a future that is more dangerous and more divided. There's no doubt that our democratic values are under threat. That is why we will introduce a bold new model of national service for 18-year-olds," Sunak said on Sunday. 

Politicians in the Labour Party rejected the suggestion. 

"The national service we need from our young people is to vote for change on 4th July," Andy Burnham, mayor of Greater Manchester said, according to Yahoo News. 

The Conservative Party said the proposal would be funded by diverting money from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and by cracking down on tax evaders.
