A major fire has severely damaged Adolf Hitler’s former mountain retreat, commonly known as the Eagle’s Nest, in southern Germany.

The blaze broke out on Friday evening at the Kehlsteinhaus, a historic building perched high in the Bavarian Alps near Berchtesgaden.

Emergency services received an alert at around 9:15 p.m. local time, and firefighters arriving at the scene found the structure ablaze.

Approximately 200 firefighters and emergency personnel were mobilized to tackle the fire.

However, the building’s remote location, difficult mountain access and severe weather conditions complicated efforts to bring the fire under control, reports said.

No injuries were reported, and authorities said no one was found inside the building.

German police arrested a 33-year-old German male in connection with the incident. Investigators are working to establish the cause of the fire and determine whether the suspect was involved. Authorities have not confirmed a motive.
