Motorist who plowed into crowd of Liverpool soccer fans arrested for attempted murder

The driver of the minivan that plowed into a crowd of soccer fans Monday in the English city of Liverpool has been arrested for alleged attempted murder, authorities said Tuesday.

The unnamed suspect, who has so far been identified only as a 53-year-old white male, has also been charged with reckless driving and is believed to have been on drugs during the incident, according to ABC News.

The 65 injured – including four children – were attending a parade for the Liverpool soccer team's Premier League victory. 

Merseyside Police, whose jurisdiction includes Liverpool, said 11 of those injured remained in the hospital Tuesday and all are in stable condition.

Officials said they had a traffic-safety plan was in place, but when the parade route was temporarily reopened for an ambulance responding to an earlier, non-related incident the suspect followed the emergency vehicle inside the crowd.

The event is reportedly being investigated as a terror attack.
