Two Americans wounded in Amsterdam stabbing attack

Two Americans on Thursday were among the five people seriously injured in a knife attack on a busy street in Amsterdam, Netherlands, according to Dutch officials.

Amsterdam police have not yet identified a motive for the attack, but confirmed it lasted several minutes before a passerby overpowered the attacker and wounded them. The suspect has been taken into custody, the Associated Press reported.

The Americans have been identified as a 67-year-old woman and a 69-year-old man. A 73-year-old woman from Belgium, a 26-year-old man from Poland, and a 19-year old woman from Amsterdam were also injured.

“The police investigation is in full swing and has full priority at the moment. We hope to soon get more clarity about the background of this horrible stabbing,” Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema said in a statement. "Our hearts go out to the victims, their families and loved ones."

The status of the people seriously injured was not immediately clear. An investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
