Far-right Jose Antonio Kast wins Chilean presidency: AP

Kast has been compared to President Donald Trump and Argentinian President Javier Milei.

Far-right presidential candidate José Antonio Kast won election to the Chilean presidency on Sunday evening.

As of press time, Kast led with 58.30% of the vote to Jeannette Jara's 41.70%, with 95% of precincts reported, according to the Associated Press.

Kast has been compared to President Donald Trump and Argentinian President Javier Milei. He is expected to become an ally of Washington.

Chile transitioned to democracy in the 1990s, following the regime of Augusto Pinochet, a far-right leader who came to power in a military coup in 1973.
