Hall of Fame pitcher says family still missing in DR roof collapse, as death toll rises to 124
The death toll in the roof collapse at the Jet Set club in Santo Domingo on Tuesday has reached 124 people so far, with hundreds of others injured. The cause of the collapse is not currently clear.
Major League Baseball's Hall of Fame pitcher Pedro Martinez said late Tuesday night that members of his family are still missing, after the roof of a nightclub they were in collapsed in the Dominican Republic.
The death toll in the roof collapse at the Jet Set club in Santo Domingo on Tuesday has reached 124 people so far, with hundreds of others injured, per the Associated Press. The cause of the collapse is not currently clear.
Former World Series champion Octavio Dotel and former MLB player Tony Blanco were among the people confirmed dead, along with Nelsy Cruz, the governor of Montecristi and sister of seven-time Major League Baseball All-Star Nelson Cruz.
Martinez, an eight-time MLB All-Star, confirmed that his family members were in the club during the roof collapse in a video posted on social media. It is not clear how many of his family members remain missing.
"I still have family members that are still in the rubble, and we don't know what happened to them," Martinez said. "We just want to be strong, as we always have been."
Martinez also expressed his condolences to people with family members in the Dominican Republic in a post on X.
"With a heavy heart I send condolences to all our family members and the people in the United States that have family in the Dominican Republic," he wrote. "We are sad and affected by the tragedy. Our hearts are with you. We are a country that prays a lot and remains united all the time."
Rescue operations are still underway, with the city's Center of Emergency Operations Director saying he would continue looking until all missing people are accounted for.
