Central Command says two vessels sailing under U.S. flags transited Strait of Hormuz

U.S. Central Command on Sunday said that two U.S.-flagged commercial ships successfully transited the Strait of Hormuz, supported by Project Freedom. 

Destroyers in the gulf are assisting efforts to open up the strait, according to CENTCOM. 

President Donald Trump's post on Truth Social on Sunday saying that U.S. would begin guiding ships from other nations out of the strait, on which Iran has an eastern shore and is a major oil shipping channel. Iran's military warned Monday that U.S. forces will be attacked if they begin escorting ships through the Strait of Hormuz. 

Iran's state media claimed that two missiles fired by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps struck a U.S. warship, a claim that CENTCOM denies. 

Project Freedom began on May 4 in an effort to restore commercial shipping through the strait. 

“Our support for this defensive mission is essential to regional security and the global economy as we also maintain the naval blockade,” Adm. Brad Cooper, CENTCOM commander, said in a statement.
