Iran reportedly threatens to retaliate by targeting US, Israeli energy infrastructure if attacked

The Iranian government reportedly threatened on Friday to target American and Israeli energy infrastructure if the country is attacked by the United States amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. 

The warning comes after President Donald Trump signaled this week that he was prepared for full-scale military action that could accelerate an end to the conflict.

A senior Iranian security official told the Iranian-aligned Tasnim News agency that the government and military were prepared to respond to a U.S. or Israeli attack by targeting critical infrastructure and that it has demonstrated it has the ability to carry such attacks out.

“Iran has prepared extensive response plans that include targeting critical infrastructure of Israel and US energy infrastructure in the region, and that Tehran is prepared to carry them out,” the official told the outlet.

The resumption of fighting in the region comes after Trump paused his strikes against the Middle Eastern country over the weekend in order to give peace negotiations another chance. 

The White House has since warned Trump will not "stand by and allow this terrorist behavior to occur” and that “Iran will continue to pay until they come to the table in, what President Trump deems, a meaningful way," according to Fox News.
