President Donald Trump omn Monday reiterated that he believes the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Middle East in his remarks at the Gaza peace summit in Egypt.

“Together we’ve achieved what everyone said was impossible: peace in the Middle East,” the president told more than 30 world leaders assembled for the summit. “After years of suffering and bloodshed” the war is over, Trump also said.

After a visit to Israel earlier on Monday, President Trump traveled to the Egyptian resort town of Sharm El-Sheik for a ceremony co-hosted by the Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. Leaders from across the region and from Europe attended to mark the agreement, celebrate the end of hostilities and the release of hostages.

President al-Sisi, who the Americans credited with a central mediating role in the ceasefire negotiations, struck a hopeful tone at a peace summit and promised that his country would begin working immediately to help implement the peace plan and rebuilding of Gaza.

“Let us turn this historic moment into a new beginning,” Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said at the summit, speaking before the American president. He promised that Egypt would work with the U.S. and regional partners to begin rebuilding and developing the strip to provide “livelihoods and help to Palestinians in their lands.”
