Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko says Ukraine will likely have to give up land to Russia to get a peace deal with the country.

"One of the scenarios is … to give up territory," Klitschko said in a BBC interview published Friday. "It's not fair. But for the peace ... temporary peace, maybe it can be a solution, temporary."

Klitschko said the Ukrainian people would "never accept occupation" by Russia.

His comments come after a missile attack on Kyiv that killed 12 people and injured 80 and appears to run counter to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky saying any peace deal would not include allowing Russia to keep Ukaine's Crimea peninsula that it seized in 2014.

The U.S. has been pushing for a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine to end the three-year-long war that includes Crimea.

White House envoy Steve Witkoff is set to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday to continue peace talks.

Zelensky has said he would like to meet with Trump at Pope Francis's funeral on Saturday in Rome.
