Airplane baggage handler dies after reportedly being sucked into jet engine

An airlines baggage handler died over the weekend after reportedly being sucked into a jet engine at an Alabama airport.

The incident occurred at about 3 p.m. Saturday at the Montgomery Regional Airport. 

The victim worked for Piedmont Airlines, an American Airlines regional carrier.

"We are devastated by the accident," American Airlines said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and our local team members. We are focused on ensuring that all involved have the support they need during this difficult time."

Two sources told Reuters the employee died due to an accident involving "one of the airplane’s engines that was running."

The aircraft was reportedly an Embraer 175 which was made to carry 124 passengers and used for short-to-medium-range routes.

Airport Executive Director Wade Davis issued a statement following the accident.

"We are saddened to hear about the tragic loss of a team member of the AA/Piedmont Airlines." Davis said.

The airport resumed normal operations, and authorities have not release official details about the incident.
