Major League Baseball returns with four teams hosting Opening Day games
Fans are not allowed in the stadiums but they can watch the games on TV
Major League Baseball returns Thursday after roughly three months of suspended play because of the coronavirus.
Four teams will host opening days – the World Series Champion Washington Nationals, New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants.
The games are being played days after the league and its players union agreed to a 60-game season.
"I’m excited for baseball to start again because I love the competitive energy and excitement from watching the games," said Javonna Brigham, a fan from Virginia. "Along with cheering on my favorite players, and yelling at the TV when something goes wrong."
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, stadiums will be empty but fans can watch the games on TV.
Some players have decided not to play this season amid fears of contracting the virus.
In an effort to prevent the spread of the virus, the league has made some changes including no spitting. In addition, pitchers must carry a small wet rag to moisten their fingers, instead of licking them. Teams must also provide expanded dugout and bullpen space, and fielders are being encouraged to keep several steps away from base runners.
"So for me, the game has been there through so many dark moments in our history, and it has always served as a distraction during those times," said Tony Sheaffer, from Maryland. "There really hasn't been a lot to look forward to in the last few months, so I'm glad there finally is. I've been a baseball fan my whole life and despite what others might be saying about how this season won't count for anything, I'm beyond thrilled we have the National Pastime back."
