Washington Nationals baseball player calls out Los Angeles Dodgers for anti-Catholic sentiment

Washington Nationals pitcher Trevor Williams called out the Los Angeles Dodgers Tuesday for re-inviting to Pride Night and honoring a drag group that mocks Catholics. 

"As a devout Catholic, I am deeply troubled by the Dodgers' decision to re-invite and honor the group 'The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence' at their Pride Night this year," Williams wrote on Twitter. 

"A Major League Baseball game is a place where people from all walks of life should feel welcomed, something I greatly respect and support," the post continued. "This is the purpose of different themed nights hosted by the organization, including Pride Night."

Earlier this month, the LA Dodgers announced that they would be honoring a drag group on Pride Night that goes by the name of "Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence," a group of "queer and trans nuns" with a history of anti-Catholic messaging. After backlash from Catholic groups and the public occurred, the team said they would not be honoring them. 

The Dodgers then walked back their decision the next day after the group, LA Pride, said they would no longer participate in Pride Night as a result of the Dodgers' decision against honoring the "Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence." At this point, Pride Night is still on for June 16.

"To invite and honor a group that makes a blatant and deeply offensive mockery of my religion, and the religion of over 4 million people in Los Angeles county alone, undermines the values of respect and inclusivity that should be upheld by any organization," Williams wrote. 

Williams concluded his post by saying that fellow Catholics should re-consider supporting an organization that welcomes groups that mock them. 

"I know I am not alone in my frustration, hurt and disappointment about this situation," he concluded. "As Catholics, we look to Jesus Christ and the way He was treated and we realize that any suffering in this world united us to Him in the next."
