With DOGE gavel, MTG aims to end federal funding of news, tax breaks for nonprofits causing harm

“They can hate us on their own dime, not the American people's hard earned tax dollars,” Rep. Majorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., says.

The chairwoman of the special House panel exploring ways to shrink government spending told Just the News on Wednesday night that she is ready to end tax exemptions for nonprofits that cause America harm and to end federal subsidies for left-leaning news organizations like National Public Radio and PBS.

“They can hate us on their own dime, not the American people's hard-earned tax dollars,” Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., said during a wide-ranging interview on a Just the News-Association of Mature American Citizens (AMAC) special report that aired Wednesday night on Real America’s Voice television network.

“We need to end the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and completely defund NPR and PBS,” she added just hours after a dramatic hearing before the House Subcommittee on Delivering on Government Efficiency (DOGE) during which executives for the two taxpayer-backed networks were confronted with evidence of left-leaning political biases.

That evidence, she said during the hearing, included:

  • Prior social media posts in which NPR CEO Katherine Maher derided Donald Trump a “deranged racist” and a “fascist;” (Maher told the hearing “I regret those tweets.”)
  • PBS showcasing a clip of a drag queen reading a book on “Let’s Learn,” a show that targeted children between the ages of 3 and 8; (PBS claimed it posted the clip on a Website but did not air it on the show.)
  • A PBS news video clip that suggested Elon Musk made a fascist Nazi salute when he put his hand over his heart and extended it outward to express sympathy for the American people.

In her interview, Greene said she was also concerned that government-funded news outlets didn’t cover the story of a Democrat congresswoman who made comments disparaging of wheelchair-bound Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican.

“They didn't have one single news story on my colleague, Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett, who had attacked Governor Abbott for being in a wheelchair,” Greene said. “What a horrific thing she said. And it's so shameful.”

She added: “Their news is so biased. As a matter of fact, most of the news that they report — not only NPR but PBS — has a 90% left-leaning bias and America's so sick of it, they are so sick and tired of it. So Americans have basically been taxed and forced to fund this left-leaning, hard-left-leaning bias, and we're going to make sure that we stop that.”

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting got more than a half billion dollars in taxpayer money during fiscal 2025. NPR says only 1% of its funding comes from the government though it does collect tens of millions of dollars in syndication fees from affiliate stations that also are federally funded.

During their appearance, the executives from NPR and PBS and their Democrat allies pleaded to save their networks, saying their channels are sometimes the only source of news in rural and other underserved areas.

In her interview, Greene also decried nonprofit groups for organizing protests that have led to the firebombing and vandalization of Tesla electric vehicles made by Musk’s company.

“We're very concerned about the groups that are organizing these different so-called protests that have really led to firebombing Tesla dealerships, burning Tesla vehicles, even attacking regular citizens who are just simply Tesla owners and drivers,” she said. “We believe that there is funding going and massive support going into all of these organized, dangerous and violent protests.

“And let's be honest, we've seen this before, right? Remember BLM though they were supposed to be mostly peaceful protests, and then we watched cities across America burn every single night. Police officers were attacked, over 93 police vehicles destroyed, and over $2 billion in damage all across American cities during the entire so-called summer of love. Well, I think this is the same playbook.

She added “what we don't want to see is any federal tax dollars funding that.”

When asked whether she would propose ending tax exemptions for nonprofits that have fomented violence or caused harm in America, she said her subcommittee would consider that.

“I think that's a great idea,” she said. “We'll be looking at all kinds of solutions like that. But yeah, why would any group be allowed to be tax-exempt and not pay taxes just like everyone else in this country when they're using their money to fund such dangerous and radical ideas and attacks on an American business?

“Tesla is an American business, and Tesla owners are regular Americans, by the way,” she added.
