Sen. Ron Johnson proposes Trump's 'one big beautiful bill' be broken up into three parts
Johnson said while he appreciated all of Trump's work in his first 100 days in office, he just disagreed with how the president wanted to pass a comprehensive legislative package in one large bill.
Top Trump Senate ally, Wisconsin GOP Sen. Ron Johnson, on Wednesday said President Donald Trump's "one big beautiful bill" should be broken up into three separate parts.
Johnson said that while he appreciated all of Trump's work in his first 100 days in office, he just disagreed with how the president wants to pass a comprehensive legislative package in one large bill.
"We've got big spenders in our party who don't want to reduce any government spending or very little of it," Johnson said on the "Just the News, No Noise" TV show. "So as a result, trying to craft one big, beautiful bill is going to be very difficult."
Johnson said he thinks the legislative package should be broken up into three parts: border security, defense funding and extending the current tax code.
Trump wants to pass a comprehensive legislative package that will provide money for border security and extend the president's 2017 tax cuts.
Johnson says if the package gets to the Senate, he most likely won't vote for it.
"I'm not sure this big, beautiful bill can pass," Johnson said. "I'm not going to vote for it if it actually increases the deficit. And right now it looks like it will increase the deficit."
