House Democrats this week are hoping to force a chamber-wide vote on blocking President Donald Trump's tariffs on Canada, with the vote possibly occurring as early as Wednesday, multiple news outlets reported Monday.

Democratic New York Rep. Gregory Meeks introduced the resolution to end the tariffs last March but House Republicans blocked the vote until January, according to Politico. Trump imposed the tariffs on Canada last year over the country's failure to prevent fentanyl from flowing across the United States' northern border.

Two unidentified staffers told Politico on Monday that House Democrats still need to meet and decide when to offer the resolution again but that it is expected to be offered again on Wednesday.

Nebraska GOP Rep. Don Bacon indicated to the outlet that he will likely vote to end the tariffs if the resolution does come back up.

“We have a trade agreement with them, and I don’t like how the White House has treated our neighbor and ally,” Bacon said.

The vote would largely be symbolic even if the resolution does pass in the Republican-controlled chamber because Trump is expected to veto it, which would need a two-thirds majority in both chambers to overturn.
