GOP House passes Trump's 'Big Beautiful Bill'
The bill passed 215-214.
The GOP-led House early Thursday morning passed President Trump's spending bill, following an all-night debate that started at about midnight.
The bill passed 215-214. Two Republicans voted against the bill -- Reps. Thomas Massie (Ky.) and Warren Davidson (Ohio) -- and another, House Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Harris (Md.), voted “present,” The Hill news outlet reported.
“We’re going to get it [to Trump's desk] by Independence Day, July 4th,” House Speaker Mike Johnson said Thursday regarding the budget bill, Punchbowl News reported.
President Donald Trump on Thursday praised House Republicans for passing the bill.
"'THE ONE, BIG, BEAUTIFUL BILL' has PASSED the House of Representatives! This is arguably the most significant piece of Legislation that will ever be signed in the History of our Country!" Trump posted on Truth Social.
"The Bill includes MASSIVE Tax CUTS, No Tax on Tips, No Tax on Overtime, Tax Deductions when you purchase an American Made Vehicle, along with strong Border Security measures, Pay Raises for our ICE and Border Patrol Agents, Funding for the Golden Dome, 'TRUMP Savings Accounts' for newborn babies, and much more! Great job by Speaker Mike Johnson, and the House Leadership, and thank you to every Republican who voted YES on this Historic Bill! Now, it’s time for our friends in the United States Senate to get to work, and send this Bill to my desk AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! There is no time to waste."
“House Republicans have delivered historic America First policy wins for the American people,” House Majority Whip Tom Emmer said in a statement on Thursday.
“Not only does our One Big Beautiful Bill include the largest reduction in mandatory spending in history and bring out-of-control government programs to account, it also allows President Trump to continue his essential border security and deportation operations and creates a pro-growth tax code that prioritizes the working class. While Americans are still recovering from the failures of the Biden administration, President Trump and House Republicans are delivering on their promises to put the American people back on top.”
Rep. Andrew Garbarino, R-N.Y., missed the vote, according to Punchbowl News.
“After sitting through proceedings all night, the Congressman briefly stepped out and inadvertently missed the vote. He was present throughout the lead-up to the legislation’s consideration and fully intended to support it. This is one of many reasons why governing should happen in the light of day—not in the dead of night,” the outlet reported.
Rep. David Schweikert, R-Ariz., also didn't vote.
The spending and multi-trillion-dollar tax-cut measure now goes to the Republican-controlled Senate, where changes are expected.
The passage of the sweeping domestic policy bill is a major victory for Trump and Johnson, following weeks of tense negotiations within the House Republican Conference, particularly between the group's moderate and most conservative members, on such key issues as proposed changes to Medicaid and tax breaks.
