CBS challenges Rep. Nehls' combat service record
Rep. Troy Nehls, the investigation found, had received one Bronze Star, but not two as he has previously claimed.
Texas Republican Rep. Troy Nehls is under scrutiny for discrepancies between his military service record and public statements he made about medals he earned during his time in the U.S. Army.
Nehls served in Iraq and Afghanistan, engaged in combat, and was awarded the Bronze Star.
But a CBS News review of his service record concluded he had not received two Bronze Stars, as he had claimed, and his Combat Infantryman Badge from Afghanistan had been revoked in 2023 because he did not serve as an infantryman or Special Forces soldier.
Nehls’ press secretary told CBS News that the congressman doesn’t wear medals he wasn’t awarded.
The Bronze Star is awarded for heroic actions in combat.
