Ohio Republican credits Trump, Democrats for flipping him to a 'yes' vote on pending megabill

Ohio GOP Rep. Warren Davidson on Wednesday night credited President Donald Trump and the Democratic response to the president's "One Big Beautiful Bill" as the reason he is switching his vote to a "yes" on the looming legislation.

Davidson initially voted against the massive funding bill when the House passed it in May, but the legislation has since returned after the Senate made a lot of changes in order to pass it on Tuesday. Lawmakers are hoping to send the bill to the president's desk by Friday.

The Republican lawmaker said he has spoken to the president multiple times since he last voted, and praised Trump as a "master" negotiator.

“I got to say, no one puts a deal together like President Trump, he’s a master," Davidson told The Hill. "But I think one of the other persuasive things was just looking at the Democrats’ reaction to it. Maybe the bill is better than I thought. Democrats’ reaction helped me persuade that, wow, maybe this bill does, does do some really good things."

The comment comes as former President Barack Obama urges his fellow Democrats to call their representatives and urge them to vote against the bill.

Davidson also said he believes the Senate version of the legislation is the "best product" Republicans can expect, after they lowered the cap on state and local tax deductions, and made Medicaid reforms more aggressive.

“I think this is probably the best product we can get, and I want to do as much as I can to help President Trump and the team get this bill across the finish line," he added.

House Republican leadership said it is still expecting to pass the legislation late Wednesday night, but the vote has been stalled so far as the GOP tries to gather enough support.
