Ron Johnson says Trump bill won't pass Senate by July 4 deadline

The massive legislative package passed the House last month.

Wisconsin GOP Sen. Ron Johnson on Wednesday told reporters that the upper chamber will not be able to pass President Donald Trump's legislative package by the July 4 deadline.

The comment comes amid infighting between Republican holdouts over the president's "one big, beautiful bill," which passed the House last month.

Johnson, a staunch fiscal hawk, has criticized the massive legislation for adding money to the federal debt.

“It won’t happen,” Johnson said, according to The Hill. “The sooner President Trump recognizes the reality of the situation, the sooner we can work on a smaller version of the bill, do the things that have to be done: Extend current tax law, increase the debt ceiling [and] provide border funding."

The senator also proposed raising the debt ceiling enough for the government to borrow money for one more year in order to keep pressure on Congress, and reduce spending levels to what they were before the COVID-19 pandemic.

The feud over the legislation comes as Congress faces a mid-July deadline to raise the debt ceiling or else the United States will default on its loans.
