The Senate on Monday night confirmed former Oregon lawmaker Lori Chavez-DeRemer's nomination for Labor secretary in a bipartisan vote of 67-32.

The rare bipartisan confirmation stems from her relationship with labor unions, which endorsed her bid for reelection in November, which she barely lost.

President Donald Trump nominated her for the position last year, also citing her support from the labor community as well as the business community. Her nomination was advanced to a final vote last week.

Former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell voted no on Chavez-DeRemer's nomination, accusing her of pushing policies that would force Americans to join unions.

"Most Americans believe joining a union should be a personal choice – not a mandate – which is why more than half the states, including Kentucky, have adopted right-to-work laws," McConnell said in a statement. "Secretary Chavez-DeRemer will have a critical opportunity to put the interests of working families ahead of Big Labor bosses by empowering every American worker to join a union on their terms. I hope she takes it.”
