Senate Democrats call for Trump to outline a plan for handling Israel-Iran conflict

A group of five Democratic senators on Wednesday urged President Donald Trump to release a plan for dealing with Iran, amid its ongoing conflict with Israel.
Trump told reporters earlier in the day that he was still weighing his options for the Israel-Iran conflict, including the use of the United States military, but maintained that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon.
The group of five Democrats, which includes Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senate Armed Services Ranking Member Jack Reed, warned that the conflict could turn into a regional war that jeopardizes American troops, and that the U.S. needed a clear plan, per Politico.
“Congress is an equal partner in preserving and defending U.S. national security around the world, and Congress has not provided authorization for military action against Iran — we will not rubberstamp military intervention that puts the United States at risk,” the senators said. “The United States cannot sleepwalk into a third war in as many decades.”
The group reminded the president that he is required to get consent from Congress in order to formally enter a war.
"He owes Congress and the American people a strategy for U.S. engagement in the region,” they continued. “We need a clear, detailed plan outlining the goals, risks, cost, and timeline for any proposed mission, as well as how he will ensure the safe evacuation of Americans in harm’s way all across the region.”
The coalition of senior Democrats, which also included Sens. Mark Warner of Virginia, Patty Murray of Washington and Chris Coons of Delaware, urged Trump to pursue a more diplomatic approach to Iran while also encouraging him to continue defending Israel from Iranian airstrikes.
The statement comes as the U.S. sends more resources to the Middle East, including a large number of refueling aircraft and an aircraft carrier.
