Speaker Johnson predicts House will not vote on Epstein resolution before August recess

House Speaker Mike Johnson on Monday told reporters that there will not be a floor vote on a resolution that calls for the Trump administration to release more documents on the disgraced late financier Jeffrey Epstein before the chamber leaves for its month-long recess.

Kentucky GOP Rep. Thomas Massie announced last week that he would file a discharge petition that mandate the release of more Epstein files. But President Donald Trump has since ordered Attorney General Pam Bondi to release relevant grand jury testimony related to Epstein. 

Johnson claimed that House Republicans and the president both want more transparency when it comes to Epstein, and so no further action from Congress needs to be taken yet, Politico reported. 

“My belief is we need the administration to have the space to do what it is doing, and if further congressional action is necessary or appropriate, then we’ll look at that,” he said. “But I don’t think we’re at that point right now, because we agree with the president.”

The comment comes as House Democrats on the Rules Committee plan to force another vote on Epstein during the committee's meeting Monday afternoon. 

"We’re going to give them one last chance to do the right thing before their August recess break," Rules Committee ranking member Jim McGovern said. 

The House is expected to break for its summer recess on Thursday, and return Sept. 2, 2025.
